  • Danuta Kowalska : The meeting of the tradition and the modern times in King David’s Psalms translated by Bohdan Drozdowski

The aim of this paper is to analyse the phraseological layer of the poetic paraphrase of The Psalter in Bohdan Drozdowski’s translation. Published in 2008, King David’s Psalms are an interesting example of dynamic equivalence in the area of translation. They also make an attempt at finding, at the level of the system of the Polish language, specific syntactic, semantic and stylistic equivalents of the same values as the original Hebrew text. The purpose of the conducted analyses is to answer the question whether, and to what extent, Bohdan Drozdowski retains the layer of traditional phrases, which are associated with the Psalter style. To what extent his poetic paraphrase breaks with the Polish tradition of translation, which has been developing since the Middle Ages, and to what extent it has remained faithful to it.

In Bohdan Drozdowski’s paraphrase, traditional biblical phrases are intermingled with Polish idioms that are abundant with marked colloquial lexis and expressive formations, which permits the conclusion that although the poet wanted to modernise Psalms and adapt them to the mentality and sensitivity of the modern reader, he did so while protecting the layer of traditional phrases. This layer, although slightly depleted in comparison to traditional translations, is noticeable and penetrates deep into the text of the translation, becoming, so to speak, a basis for the innovative ideas of the translator. This intended coexistence of lexical and phraseological layers that are so stylistically and genetically varied is a characteristic feature of the paraphrase in question. In this multitude of voices, the voice of many epochs can be heard, which seems to be emphasised by the timeless character of the Psalter, visible in the Polish language since the mediaeval times. This means that Bohdan Drozdowski’s paraphrase links, as it were, the old times and the modern times and becomes a meeting place of the tradition and the present day.

  • Magdalena Pietrzak : Sienkiewicz’s realisations of the genre pattern of the review(on the example of reports on painting exhibitions)

The aim of this paper is to analyse Henryk Sienkiewicz’s reports on painting exhibitions from the genological viewpoint. The reports were published in Gazeta Polska (The Polish Gazette) in the period 1879–1881, in “Kronika miejscowa” (“Local Chronicle”) column. The texts are an interesting object of research due to their not fully determined genological status: for some researchers these are feuilletons, for others – critical reports, that is reviews in fact.

Material analyses permit the location of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s accounts on painting exhibitions within the genre field of reviews, with complex correlations between review and feuilleton and between review and report taken into consideration. As was rightly noticed by Bożena Witosz “genres crystallise their features together with other forms of expression which function in a given culture at a particular time” (2005: 181). Reports are a realisation of the alternate review pattern. Modifications resulting in the creation of a variant refer to: limiting the subject matter to evaluation of paintings (the cognitive aspect), combining information with evaluation and opinion (the structural aspect), expanding the illocutionary potential (the reports fulfilled various functions: information, education, popularisation, persuasion). As regards stylistic features, multi-style, resulting from the abundance of style registers, is typical of reports.

  • Jakub Bobrowski : Linguistic stylisation in the feature film – an outline of a research concept
This paper presents the concept of research on linguistic stylisation in the Polish feature film. The author notices that the issue has not been an object of major interest on the part of linguists to date although the film art plays a significant role in the contemporary cultural life and screenwriters use stylisation devices probably not less frequently than novelists or playwrights. With reference to the relevant literature, the author formulates the essential assumptions of the designed research. The material base of the analyses should be recordings. As regards methodology, achievements of structuralist stylistics, linguistic research on the language of television, and concepts of cultural linguistics should be used. At the first stage of the works, it is recommendable to choose one stylisation category as an object of description. When selecting films for analysis, one should be guided by professional studies of cinematography.
  • Ewa Wasilewska : Compound names of colours in the novel titled Lód (Ice) by Jacek Dukaj
This paper is dedicated to the lexical layer of the multi-award-winning contemporary novel Lód (Ice) by Jacek Dukaj. The plot takes place at the beginning of the 20th century; as regards the stylistic layer, references to the language of the turn of the 20th century can be noticed. Due to the subject matter of the novel, what seems to be especially interesting is names of colours, including in particular compound adjectives. Compound names of colours have been analysed in two layers: by their morphology and by the presence of individual forms in lexicographic sources (SJPL, SWil, SW, L-S, SJPD, SJPSz, ISJP, USJP), and in NKJP corpus and the Internet – in Google search engine. The material analysis shows that the author of the novel applies lexis that is archaic or refers to one created at the turn of the 20th century on multiple occasions. As many as 54 out of 80 words are neologisms unevidenced in any lexicographic source, yet referring to the old lexis with their structure.
  • Joanna Wierzchowska : Lexical exponents of miracular consciousness in the Towianist text (on the example of Nota dla Klary R. (A note to Klara R.))
The object of this paper is a description of lexical exponents of miracular consciousness based on a selected text by A. Towiański. The description is consistent with the theory that language not only expresses notions but also creates them and conditions their existence. The manner of building the semantic layer of a message permits insight in the manner of the existence, that is it is possible to describe the reality represented in the culture-based text. The culture-based text in question is selected fragments of Nota do Klary R. (A note to Klara R.). Their semantics is strongly related to the notion of miracular consciousness. Specific Towianist vocabulary emphasises the deeply humanistic nature of the consciousness. It is humanism within the numinotic meaning, that is determined by the supernatural reality, where the elements of consolation and terror occur alongside. Terror has a positive meaning since it permits consolation characterised by features beyond any probability. Such consolation is a value strictly related to the category of miraculousness, which was deeply experienced by romanticists. It was possible because they disregarded empiricism and glorified intuition. It made miracular consciousness a material with which A. Towiański weaved his statement.
