Stanisław Dubisz : Language Codification in Professor Mieczysław Szymczak&s Works - Linguistic Culture and Lexicography in Practice
This year there is the 20th death anniversary of Professor Mieczysław Szymczak, an outstanding Polish linguist, the author of more than 200 scholarly works, the editor of Polish language dictionaries and the general editor of Poradnik Językowy. This is the reason for raising the subject of his language codification. The issue is analyzed with reference to his assumptions worked out in his papers concerning linguistic culture and in Słownik ortograficzny języka polskiego (Polish Orthographic Dictionary, published in 1975) and in the three-volume Słownik języka polskiego (Polish Language Dictionary, published 1978-1979-1981) - both edited by M. Szymczak. The analysis revealed functionality of linguistic forms as the most crucial criterion of codification. The article also presents M. Szymczak`s innovations in lexicographic description.

Joanna Kściuczyk : Press Obituary - The Reflexive Communication Between the Living and the Dead
The aim of the article is to analyze the communicative layout of a press obituary, based on the material gathered from "Gazeta Wyborcza". According to the initial assumption, the tendency towards changes in the linguistic structure of the contemporary obituary originated from activation of various interactive levels. What draws special attention is including the dead person within the communicative pattern of the obituary. As a result, it breaks through the obituary cliche - thus texts within the black frames often become a reflexive voice between the two worlds.

Joanna Dębicka : On the Contemporary Press Obituary
The article offers a description of the language and structure of obituaries, as the most uncommon texts among linguistic announcements of this kind. The research is based on obituaries from "Gazeta Wyborcza" and the Wielkopolski regional addition to this newspaper from 1st January till 31st December 2002. The analyzed obituaries are an attempt to talk about the dead, death and its results in an unconventional way. The texts prove high flexibility of the form and contents of the contemporary press obituary.

Ewa Kaptur : The Linguistic Form of Memorial Obituaries
The objective of the article is to present the linguistic form of press obituaries. About 10 400 obituaries from daily newspapers have been used here. The author discusses genre features, basic construction features, the language and optional parts of the announcements: epithets of death anniversary and death circumstances, identification of achievements, information about the mass, a request for a moment of reflection and prayer, the address of the mourning house, initial and final formulas.
The study has resulted in the general observation that the language used in this kind of announcements is not varied and the form is limited to a few basic syntactic patterns, which have similar, little emotional intensity.

Paweł Paziak : I jeszcze ciało - to tak niewiele (And Still the Body, It`s Not So Much). Semantic Connotations of ciało (Body) in K.K. Baczyński`s Poetry
The article includes a description of lexical connotations in K.K. Baczyński`s poetry. The subject of the analysis is the lexical unit ciało, in the view of its acquired meanings in the poet`s idiolect. There are several distinguished most crucial meaning implications of the analyzed lexeme. The distinguished connotation qualities are proved by other poetic linguistic facts - colloquial phraseology. What adds to the semantic picture of the lexeme under discussion is its view against cultural tradition background. The most significant connotations are: %materialization`, %resistance`, %impermanence`, %suffering`, %death`, %love`, and %moral revival`. What draws attention is interesting semantic relations that occur between two areas associated with ciało (body) and dusza (soul). It is, however, the issue for separate research.

Katarzyna Doboszyńska-Markiewicz : Do sypanie (Sprinkling) and lanie (Pouring) Have to Go Down?
The article points out that there is no one sort of sypać and lać, but their various units including the verbs. Sprinkling sawdust on the floor (sypanie) or pouring water into a glass (lanie) has a different semantic-syntagmatic structure than throwing sand in the eyes (sypanie) or pouring juice on the table (in Polish it is the opposition of sprinkling/pouring something into something else on the one hand and sprinkling/pouring with something on the other). Sprinkling/pouring in the latter case does not have to go down, which is proved in the paper. The deception point might be gravity, which is at the back of every language user`s mind. According to the author of the article, the two verbs in question and almost identical as far as the meaning or the predicate-argumentative structure is concerned. Semantic units without an agent of action like: Śnieg sypie or (Deszcz) leje (It`s snowing; it`s raining) are a separate case for research.

Zygmunt Saloni,
Marcin Woliński : On Słownik gramatyczny języka polskiego (Polish Grammatical Dictionary) in Preparation
In 2003 we began the project Polish Grammatical Dictionary, sponsored by the Polish Committee on Scholarly Research (KBN). The dictionary will consist of three parts: an introduction, tables of inflection and an index of lexical units with references to the tables. It will cover all the words found in the available sources (dictionaries and texts), for a total of ca. 150 000 entries. The most frequent and most useful proper names will be also included. The aim of this paper is to discuss how the results of our project will be presented and how the dictionary will be published. The traditional format of a dictionary, a book, would be inflexible and limited to the certain number of entries (ca. 80 000). Moreover, it would be not user-friendly. Therefore we intend to publish the dictionary only in electronic format, which allows us (1) to represent information in a form convenient for users, (2) to include many more entries (there is no limitation of size), and (3) to formulate many more types of searches and queries.
