  • Stanisław Dubisz : The bases of the artistic language of the Polish contemporary poetry
The sources of the contemporary poetic code are to be found in the literature of the first three decades of the 20th century. They were constituted by the following stylistic patterns: the Young Poland movement style (originating from the conviction that literature is in opposition to the commonness of life), the Skamander style (characterising the poetry of the colloquial everyday life), the avant-garde style (performing the woodcarving art of the word). Regardless of the intentions of their creators, they were all elite in nature. This is what the style of the Polish contemporary poetry is also like. Various streams originating both from the Mickiewicz tradition of seeking the words that are perfect content signs and from the intellectualised „difficult” Norwid’s poetry tradition interfere within it.
  • Joanna Korpysz-Drzazga, Tomasz Korpysz : The poetical bestiary by Wisława Szymborska. Preliminaries
  • Beata Raszewska-Żurek : Are there still poczciwy and cnotliwy people? On the shift of meaning and evaluation in the Polish language
The paper is a contribution to the analysis of the semantic development of the adjectives cnotliwy and poczciwy in the Polish language from the Old Polish to the contemporary Polish. The meaning of the adjectives and its shifts, their usages in the contexts provided for in dictionaries of Polish and the evaluation related thereto were subject to research. The adjectives cnotliwy and poczciwy used to be descriptive and evaluative in nature, their meaning was quite general, they named positive features from the viewpoint of ethical principles, and the evaluative component was dominant therein. In the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries they were highly evaluated and connected in utterances with the most important values, such as God or homeland. Only in single instances would such evaluation be upset by ironic usages. Nowadays, along with the shift of their meaning – narrowing it to the sexual sphere in the case of cnotliwy and moving away from high moral values in the case of poczciwy, they no longer have their value and are used primarily in the ironic or contemptuous sense.
  • Dorota Kostrzewa : Dictionary definitions of the lexemes człowiek [human] and ludzie [humans] and their textual usages
The present paper is a critical look at the definition of the nouns człowiek [human] and ludzie [humans] in six dictionaries of contemporary Polish. The analysis of the meanings included in the examined lexicons does not provide the complete illustration of the manner of their understanding, which leads to the conclusion that the semantic categorisation of the existing definitions should be renewed. However, this objective is not an easy one due to the multi-level understanding of both the words, the anthropocentric nature of language and the changing perspective dependant on the adopted point of view. What is more, their meanings do not coincide in all aspects owing to the different emotional charge noticeable in their colloquial usages.
  • Patrycja Pałka : Problems of the lexicographic description of proper names

The aim of this paper is an attempt to answer the question whether, and how, proper names ought to be described in general dictionaries of Polish. This is not a new problem; it was discussed in numerous studies, such as ones by Kazimierz Rymut (1988), Aleksandra Cieślikowa (1993), Wojciech Chlebda (2000) or Bożena Dereń (2005), and yet it has been still significant and topical. The importance of the discussed issues is proved by the failure to create a consistent concept of describing proper names in non-onomastic and non-specialised lexicographic works thus far, which results directly from the fact of omitting to place these units in the majority of dictionaries. Moreover, the problem of dictionary selection and description refers also to the newly created lexemes derived from onomastic words in terms of word-building and semantics and to the ones under creation.

The theoretical findings related to the indicators of onymicity and the issue of the semantic value of nomina propria, which are the most significant from the viewpoint of this paper, are presented first. Next, the presence of proper names in the selected 19th- and 20th-century lexicographic works, such as SL, Swil, SW, SJPD, SJPSz, PSWP, SWJP, USJP and ISJP, are discussed. Finally, a concept of such a lexicographic description of proper names that draws from the most recent research in the field of onomastics and linguistic semantics, on the one hand, and that arises directly from the analysis of the texts collected in the National Corpus of Polish (www.nkjp.pl), on the other hand, is proposed.

  • Małgorzata B. Majewska : Textual and database digitalisation of Słownik wileński
The paper presents the subsequent stage of digitalising Słownik wileński. The attention is focused on the benefits arising from textual digitalisation. The added capacities to search the database registering the information included in Słownik wileński are discussed.
  • Mariola Milusz : The image of the man in the contemporary press advertisements and television commercials
In the present paper the author discusses the rarely approached issues of the man’s image in press advertisements and television commercials. She points to the most common types of creations, including the image of a macho, a metrosexual man, a professional, a boy (prince), a mature man, and a celebrity. She proves that the creations of male characters are varied and present a rich variance in the manners of forming them. The author analyses the verbal and iconic codes exploited in the messages, and demonstrates their interrelation. This is obligatory in this case because the codes complement one another and create a coherent whole. The author uses the stylistic and pragmatic method of analysing the individual advertisements and commercials in the paper.
